Cost of life in Jharia
It is the largest open-pit coal mine area in northeastern India. There are numerous huge corporations doing business mining here. Quality bituminous coals are produced to supply the carbon used in India as well as the global steel industry. It is already over 100 years old.
The Indian ethnic minority who originally lived here has now lost all their homes. It is the impact of mine development that began in the British colonial era. Underground is a burning coal layer until to this day and it is impossible to physically turn off. The water quality is polluted and the soil is completely inverted and not farmed. In addition, environmental pollution is serious due to dust, smoke and toxic gas.
Here poor people gathering coal in two ways. One is to steal a few coal stone in a huge corporate coal mine. Another way is to find and collect the coal from the scrap field. Every morning they collects coal and bring to the village. Collected coal is split into appropriate sizes to make piles. They are need to burn it once. There is a huge amount of toxic gas in the process. When the fire is completely attached to the coal, it is covered with soil to block oxygen. Then the black coal swells up and the fire goes out. When after cooling down the process is completed, it is sold to the broker. Usually 4-5 family members can earn about $ 2 if they hang out all day. These coals are sold to restaurants and homes all of the India.
Ironically, this method of making the least food, bedding and clothing is the biggest reason to directly threaten their lives. Most adult males suffer from various lung disease that have progressed rapidly after their forties. They can not work and they family repeats the process of stealing more coal and baking it every day. Fortunately, a healthy adult man and woman earn money by enduring the worst conditions as a nearby daily worker.
The corporate coal mines of capitalists who destroy the environment and earn huge profits do not care about the pain. The Indian government is also closed their eyes. In the meantime, they are continuing their lives without hope by repeating generations of generations. Small NGOs or local newspapers that work there say that the beneficiaries have to solve it. If coal is depleted and capital is eventually left, only the ruined environment, polluted water and air remain.
I shot about a week here. The black soap bubbles every time I showered let me feel how poor the environment is here. Child labor, confused environment, gap of rich and poor, water that can not be drunk, burning underground, soil to be lost, violence of capital ... a comprehensive gift set of human imaginable problems is Jharia. What is cost of life in Jharia.
